Last week I was cruising through the Caribbean on the Freedom of the Seas. This was my first time in the Caribbean, my second cruise. In the tradition of cruising that I started two years ago, I have some photos with me putting up my feet. More photos and stories to come...
China presented the best Olympics opening ceremony ever. I've never seen more of a spectacular spectacular, and they made the best use of their more abundant resource - people. I think this was all because film director Zhang Yimou was the artistic director. It was a visual extravaganza like Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower, with the depth of his early movies like The Road Home and Raise the Red Lantern.
One of my goals on my Seattle trip was to visit Roq La Rue which is frequently spotlighted on BoingBoing. During my visit they were holding their 10th Anniversary group show featuring work by Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Shag, and Liz McGrath to name a few.
Next door is BLVD Gallery. I stepped in while waiting for Roq La Rue to open. BLVD's current show is by Deuce 7. I liked the work so much I bought a piece. See the work.
Finally on my last gallery stop I checked out Suite 100 Gallery for their Oceanic group show. Kelly Vivanco, who I've posted about, has a few pieces here.
Seattleites love the outdoors and who can blame them when they live in such beautiful scenery. It seems like everyone there was doing something outdoorsy on Saturday - being on the water, hiking, biking, running, etc. My Saturday was also outdoor activity day. My friend took me kayaking on Lake Washington.
During my Seattle visit I took The Underground tour. Today's Seattle is built on top of the original foundations of the city. This was to prevent flooding since Seattle sits pretty much at sea level. There's a bigger story involved, but basically on this tour you can walk on the original sidewalks of the city.
This past weekend I made my way out to Seattle and finally visit my friend Judy. To start off the trip I decided to fly Virgin America which TF raves about. What I didn't tell anyone was that I flew first class on my way to Seattle. The difference between first class and economy is more room and all the amenities you'd normally pay for in economy are included like all the movies, meals and drinks.
I was in the area so I stopped by Giant Robot on Sawtelle to see the Year of the Rat group show. I ended up buying the really cute piece to the right. It reminds me of the book If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.
The show's theme is the rat, or mouse, or rodent in celebration of the Chinese zodiac year of the rat. Here are some more pieces from the show. The exhibit closes next Wednesday.
