Delicious and convenient for the art gallery patron.
This post is long overdue. I was really intrigued when I learned about Cameron Gray's show Mise en Scene. His large paintings are composed of smaller paintings, tiled together. So from afar the piece looks one way, but up close you can see each individual tile detail. My favorite piece was his Whistler's Mother homage, which was composed of hundreds of smaller tiles depicting adult scenes. Oh la la.
Here are some more shots from the show.
Wondering around Bergamot Station one day a friend and I stumbled upon a small, but wonderful show by Terri Friedman. Her work of acrylic and plexglas in Mystic Vacation was magically gorgeous.
While visiting Amy Sol's show I checked out Kathie Olivas' show Ghost's & Martyr's. In addition to paintings, the show had several of Olivas' custom toys. Here are some of my favorites.
This weekend Amy Sol's show Tonight We Travel by Dream closes at Copro Nason Gallery. Sol is one of my favorite artists. I first caught wind of her at I Am 8-Bit and Smitten. I know it's Labor Day weekend, but if you happen to be staying in LA, please go see her graceful work.
Also check out Kathie Olivas' show Ghost's & Martyr's while you're there.
I love cows. They stink, but they're my favorite barnyard animal. I went to Glen Wexler's show The Secret Life of Cows at Track 16 Gallery. Here are some of the playful, amusing photographs of cows.
New works by Liu Zheng just closed at the Robert Berman Gallery. I stumbled into this show by accident and what immediately caught my eyes were the portraits of Mao Zedong. What you can't tell from my photos is the washed out effect that gave the paintings a blurred focus.
WACK! closed at MOCA last weekend and I didn't see it. I'm sure I didn't miss anything but contrived works of art from angry bitches. Don't get me wrong - I'm all for women expressing their oppression and anger at society. However something happens when female artist proclaim themselves as "feminists". Their work always fall short of a real dialogue. They churn out pieces under the theme of "I hate men" and "men are the enemy" and call it a day. I was a Gender Studies minor; I heard all that junk before.
Hence I wasn't really impressed by the turn out at Track 16's Then+Now exhibit, a companion show to WACK! featuring women artists from Southern California. It was just men hating, "women are objectified sexual beings" themed works. The only piece that I liked was one by Mariana Barkus called Sixpack.
The Ill Morphology show, featuring paintings from Anthony Ausgang, Joe Ledbetter, and Thomas Han, recently closed at the Copro Nason Gallery. Their works feature anthropomorphic cartoon characters. We all love cartoons. Enjoy!
